Raiders of the Lost Ark is the first installment of the action-packed adventure series Indiana Jones. The 1981 film was a notable collaboration with Hollywood legends Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. The story was written by Lucas and Philip Kaufman, and together they brought Spielberg to direct the film. Raiders of the Lost Ark stars A-list actor Harrison Ford as the protagonist Indiana Jones. Set in 1936, Jones is an adventure-seeking traveler on a journey to retrieve the long-lost Ark of the Covenant. Jones was sent by the Nazi German army to recover the artifact because it is believed to make an army invincible.
The film also stars Karen Allen, Paul Freeman, Ronald Lacey, John Rhys-Davies, and Denholm Elliott. The production cost over 20 million dollars, and the movie later grossed over 389 million dollars at the Box office. The film became the number 1 film in North America for nine weeks straight. It was also one of the top ten films for forty consecutive weeks. Raiders of the Lost Ark became the highest-grossing film in 1981, beating Superman II, On Golden Pond, and Stripes.
Raiders of the Lost Ark received numerous accolades, including five wins at the Academy Awards. It has received several other nominations at the Academy Awards, including Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Original Score. Meanwhile, the film won big at the 9th Saturn Awards, bringing home seven wins, including Best Music, Best Writing, and Best Fantasy Film.
The film’s music was composed by the distinguished John Williams. He described his compositions for the movie as “theatrical and excessive.” For the romantic scenes, Williams was inspired by older films, such as the 1942 film, Now Voyager. William won a Grammy Award for his score.
This summer, the Pacific Symphony will perform Williams’ composition for the movie live. The orchestra comprises some of the most talented musicians from around the world. The 69-piece orchestra is set to deliver this exhilarating live symphonic concert to bring viewers a whole new experience!
